Hosta tour
Yesterday a friend and I joined a bus load of hosta lovers on a day long trip to see three hosta growers.
It was a long day but surprisingly interesting and worthwhile.
The first stop was at O.P.'s garden. She is an experienced hybridizer of many years. The joy is cross pollinating one type of hosta with another to develop a new hosta. If something good comes out of it, it has to be grown approximately 5 years before they can name it and register it as a new variety. Lots of science, record keeping and patience is required.
It was a beautiful garden!
Next stop was 2 hrs. farther at a hosta garden/farm where R.F. does hybridize but basically grows and sells hundreds of different established hosta.
We ate our box lunches there and bought many, many plants. I bought PANDORAS BOX, AUTUMN FROST, SWEET TATER PIE and XANADU. Aren't the names fun?
I am trying not to add many more to my yard because of lack of space but Aaron wants hosta so he'll get some doubles so I'll have room for a few more. Haha.
Hostas can be very pricey. We saw some for upwards of $70 because they are new. I'll wait. Two that caught my eye and are on my list are TROPHY WIFE $70 (registered by R.F. above) because of the name and TWISTED LIZZARD $40 because of the color and shape! Maybe next year lol... if the price drops!
Our third stop was at another hybridized who specializes in large and giant hosta. Did you know the giants can get 4 ft tall and 7 ft across??
KING OF BUCHANAN is one of his. Those leaves are HUGE!
My friend, who is not a hosta person, said she enjoyed the day! I'm happy she was able to come along.
