Restocking the fridge

Our son came over yesterday and did a grocery run for us.  We now have nuts, chips as well as fresh dairy, deli meats and veggies.
We can snack and prepare meals that are a bit more interesting.

Today I made a hamburger rice dish and plated it on top of some fresh baby spinach and topped it with an egg-- over easy.  Bread and butter pickles and pickled beets were a nice fresh garnish.  We will have ice cream for dessert.

Yesterday I spent a large part of the day sewing 10 masks for a local hospital.  They keep asking for more so I sure hope they are not tossing them after one use.  They can be sterilized in the oven:  30 minutes at 159 degrees. I thought I had until Monday to finish them but no...she dropped them off today.  In a way I'm glad that I just bit the bullet and finished them.  I have no more surgical material/fabric so I can take a break until Monday afternoon.

I also went to the post office to mail two boxes.  One to Traverse City with 4 masks.  The other went to Sarah in Anchorage.  I wanted to send her masks and and a few other things and I only had a medium sized flat rate box in the house. I went through the house and gather up a variety of miscellaneous things:  a ball, cupboard safety latches, kids books,  wooden puzzles, a candle, ...there was more but I cannot remember.  I hope they have fun opening it etc.

I am on face-time with Sarah and the girls for an hour or more a day,  John and Sally also called and that was another hour.  Co-vid 19 did raise its head in the group of students that came back from Dordt College. The entire group was asked to self-quarantine for two weeks but that was extended to 4 weeks when on the 11th day one girl got sick.  They were happy that it was a mild case. Everyone is "free"

It sure sucks getting old.

My brother-in-law Henry  (69) has recently been diagnosed with CLL- a type of leukemia.  His brother John (71)  now has type 2 diabetes. Arie (74) has bowel issues. Brother Quinn (60)  has crones and Peter (72) has kidney issues.  Oh the joys!!

This kind of thing didn't really hit me until we started making a list.

In my family, Paula (86) is pretty deaf and the arthritis is painful, Chuck (would have been 84) died almost 1 and 1/2 years ago with heart issues, glaucoma and dementia, Louise (82) is losing her eye sight,  Rudy (81) has had a stroke and is showing signs of dementia, Juli, (77) as far as I know, is still pretty healthy,  Christina (74) has skin issues  with weird names,  then there's me (71) with a variety of issues but mainly with my eyes, and lastly, brother Art (68) who has heart issues.
My sister Chris is the family historian and will correct my errors and have more info about the family than I have.  (Thanks Chris)

What an organ recital lol!!

So here we all are getting on in years and living 'healthy' lives due to the amazing strides made in health care of late.  The development of penicillin and the myriad of drugs that followed has made life for those reaching our 'declining' years pretty amazing!

Yet, today, here we are...the entire world...dealing with a pandemic called Corona virus co-vid 19.  It's a monster and it's viral so it has been impossible to fight.  It hits young and old and there is no telling how hard.  Some have died in their 40s and lots have died in their 80s and 90s. Some have very mild symptoms and some are even a-symptomatic. The scary thing is that it is so very easy to spread-long before the person knows she is infected.  We have been ordered to stay at home, stay 6 feet away from any person we come into contact with, wear masks, no home gatherings of any kind,  Yesterday the governor of Michigan extended the order to shelter in place until the 30th of April.  The 'curve' seems to be getting flatter while the economy is dying.  All non-essential businesses are closed. There have never been so many people applying for unemployment insurance. Employees in what are considered essential services are working too many hours and are emotional wrecks because they don't want to die.  PPE is a new term for everyone- personal protective equipment.  In many places it is in short supply.
May God have mercy on us all!

Have a blessed Easter.
