Challenge

Image
About two weeks ago I went to a gardening lecture and the first thing he said (at least that I remember) was that if you can't edge all your flowerbeds then you have too many. That was food for thought. Normally that is one of the tasks I leave for last because 1. I don't see the need and 2. I'm not a fan of doing it. I have a friend who does it because she likes things "neat" ...in the yard at least. I'm more of a fan of the "English garden" look...lots of plants blooming  just where they are planted. Anyway, after the lecture and a posting on blog that I follow about how easy it is with the right tools to edge your flowerbeds, I have taken up the challenge. I will edge all the flowerbeds that butt up to the grass ... Today I did two. Actually it took less time than I imagined it would but it was heavy work.

UGH!!

Great weather ... but NO energy! I've probably never felt like this before.  Doc put me on a new prescription and I think that's the cause. Awful that what is supposed to help you can make you feel so rotten. The first BP meds made me really dizzy.  These are much worse.

Re-organization

Re-organization or something... Ever once in awhile, I feel the need to clean up neglected areas in the house and the yard as well.  It usually means shedding as well.  My first MAJOR step this year was giving away the piano. There is not much of a market for pianos these days. Millennials probably prefer keyboards. I wanted to give it to the local thrift store but they didn't want it. Pianos are as difficult to sell as the old fat television sets. I even offered it up on facebook...no takers. Yet, two weeks ago at a meeting the topic came up and believe it or not (I had a difficult time believing it) one of the ladies said her daughter would love to have a piano. She and her family had recently moved to Michigan. It was hers for the taking. A piano moving company came and picked it up on Wednesday.  There is a big empty space where it once had stood for many years. I'm still getting used to that. It's a new stage of the empty nest...

Hawthorns

Image
I have two cute flowering trees in the back east corner of the yard called Washington Hawthorns. They blossom in the spring and so provide some early relief to the drab winter-awakening landscape. This year I decided they needed a good trim. Since I had someone to help, we cut off a substantial amount of branches. I do like to keep them on the shorter side.  They look good and I like the new more compact shape.  They are called hawthorns for a very good reason! These trees have the most vicious thorns ever. Long and sharp thorns in abundance up and down EVERY branch and twig. I cut up all the branches, loaded them into the car and brought them to the dump. I have scars to prove it.
