Birthdays should be celebrated!

Image
No cake and surely no candles! No flowers! No party!  74 is too old for all of that!!  But I guess a birthday can be celebrated in other, quieter ways!  I was treated to a breakfast, a lunch and a dinner! Simple, sweet and all on different days. For breakfast I ordered pancakes because I never make pancakes any more. For lunch we had pizza and beer!  For dinner it was sushi.  (We were going to go out for steak but the restaurant had a waitlist of 1 hour! It would have been good to make a reservation!)  So we went next door to the Japanese sushi restaurant! It was wonderful except for the fried cheesecake that I ordered for dessert! It is not something I would ever eat again! The essentials       The appetizers       The food We each order a combination plate of sushi and sashimi. It was mouth watering, melt in your mouth goodness!    The leftovers I ate half and brought the rest home! The dessert

Waiting - how long should you wait??

Should I wait? How long should I wait?? (a recent dilemma) A friend is taking me out for my birthday and she is late. As I sit here wondering why, I also wonder how long I should wait! Instead of thinking too long and hard about it, I just pick up my phone and call her.  There’s no answer! I wait some more, order a beverage and think again!  Well, I call her again and this time she answers!  Oh dear, she says I will be there soon! She arrives a total of 25 minutes late and I’m thinking- no big deal! It can happen to anyone!  The trouble is that it is VERY unusual for her!  She comes casually dressed but no makeup , no jewelry and her hair is a mess! That is also VERY unusual for her!  She tells me she slept late and that she had to deal with this woman and her own daughter because they had been sleeping at her house for the last few nights.  She does not know this woman and does not even know her name. They have been sleeping upstairs where there are n...

Dogs and a trip to apple country

Image
Sasha Aaron has 2 beautiful and very large Alaskan Malamutes named Walter and Sasha.  They love visitors and welcome them exuberantly .  Walter Our son lives in apple country on the northwest side of town.  It’s called “the Ridge”  and is perfect for all kinds of fruit growing, especially apples.  I get free apples from A&J because J’s Dad grows apples. She picks and goes to a market to sell and I get some of the leftovers.   The first time I got honey crisps and turned them into a large apple crisp and 2 bags of pie filling.   On Sunday I got 3 large bags- McIntosh, Gala and  Honey Crisp  Can you tell the difference? I peeled and cored a ton of apples and made applesauce. I decided to keep the varieties separate as a taste experiment.  Each apple produced a very different applesauce.   Sweetest= Honey Crisp. Smoothest= McIntosh. Thinnest= Gala.  I had 3 large pans of apples on the stove and surprisingly only prod...

Signs of fall

Image
We are enjoying the signs of fall! the extremely hot weather has given way to cooler days and wonderfully cool nights.  I wish it would stay this way for a LONG time! Every year a friend and I head out to Countryside greenhouses and buy some pumpkins! They are not for eaten but just enjoying as I gaze out the window with my morning coffee. The annual pumpkin stack! We also buy a few garden chrysanthemums. This year they were $3.99 which is still a good deal but, like everything else, more than last year.  I chose one purple, one orange, one white and one yellow but no color showing yet!   A huge spider's web hanging from the patio umbrella. While some daylilies are meant to rebloom ...this one is not. Pretty! This lone tomato plant has produced over 40 tomatoes. Some need to ripen yet and will stay out as long as the weather stays warm!
