"Adventure" #1
My annual playing with fire or revealing my inner pyromania!
I have around 7 clumps of ornamental grasses --in the front yard. Years ago a friend suggested that the best way to "cut down" these grasses in the winter was to set fire to them!! I confess that for me that's a lot of fun!
BUT (and it's a big but) this must be done in winter while everything around is covered with snow and it must not be be windy! Unfortunately, last winter my annual burning did not happen and I had to struggle with all this grass.
It was a nice spring day and there was no wind but there was no snow! These grasses REALLY burn because, as I was informed by my biologist neighbor, they contain a lot of oil. Since I did not want to burn down the entire neighborhood nor did I want to hear the sirens of the fire trucks, I cut them all down which was no easy feat! I left stumps of 8 inches tall.
I conscientiously gather up all the straw and piled it in the wheelbarrow, I raked all around each stump and lit them up!
Each fire was nicely contained but burned ferociously! It was hot and bright enough to satisfy my inner pyromania!!The grass will grow!
Adventure #2
I was dumb at the dump.
The next day, during a cold spring drizzle, after pulling weeds for about an hour I decided I should just get it over with. I piled all of that grass and an abundance of other yard waste into the back of the van and headed to the yard waste dump. Perhaps all that wet activity had muddled my brain because at the dump I locked my car thinking I had unlocked the back door, I got out leaving my phone and keys in the car so I could work unencumbered and closed the door because it was raining pretty hard by then!
To my dismay, shock , idiocy and whatever else, I discovered that as I tried to open the back door!!
The kind man in the next car let me use his phone to call Arie and I was able to wait in the warm dry office!. A total of four men laughed...I know I deserved it!
So stupid! I want to say I'll never do that again but hey, who knows!
