Kale and habaneros

Image
Aaron gave me a wheelbarrow full of kale yesterday. We filled two tall kitchen trash bags. At home, I stripped it and washed it ...two times! Then I blanched it in a big pot on the stove, dumped in ice water and drained and bagged it! It took forever!  I ended up with 15 quart size bags 1/2 full.  That’s ALL!  I was truly disappointed considering how much there was to start with! My kitchen table piled high! Two 5 gallon buckets full of stems etc ...And that's it! Next year I'll buy it ! He also gave me some beautiful habanero peppers! I plan to dry them and spread the powder in the yard next spring!

Special things in the yard'!

Image
In my yard, even at this late date, there are a few special plants! Perennial or hardy begonia, white sedum and midnight snack cherry tomatoes! J

Color in the yard

It’s mid September and the weather still is warm.  We definitely need rain.  The perennials are still blooming!  It is so nice to sit and have my morning coffee with this view!

Grilled salmon Yum Yum

Image
Aaron went fishing on the big lake and came home with coho salmon and lake trout. Salmon on the grill!  Lake salmon is not near as pink as ocean salmon because of the lack of shrimp in their diets. It tastes every bit as good! Dinner with a side of homegrown tomatoes!! The tomatoes were yellow and red ones.  They are pretty ugly but once that has been cut off, the taste is amazing!

What's new?

Image
New to us patio furniture! The table has a lazy susan! New to us- every day dishes! New to us- formal dishes.  A set of 12 noritake china!

Washing Windows

Image
In the morning I sit at this table and have my coffee. I kept telling myself to wash the windows! I finally did!  Everything is so much brighter now! (the grass is still suffering lol)

Fresh garden Kale

Image
We were gifted two huge kale plants today and I needed to decide how to save it.  Blanch and freeze or just freeze it and crumble it afterwards. I decided to wash, chop, blanch, cool in ice water, bag it up and freeze Cut up and washed Boiling away! Draining .. Ready to bag ...and into the freezer! It was easier and quicker than I thought it would be. I packed larger bags for boerenkoel and smaller ones for soup.   It will taste so good this winter.

From famine to feast

After a very long time at home, we finally made plans, accepted invitations,  etc From home cooked everything to Perrins, The Gathering Place, Beer City Bread and Horrocks. Breakfast at The Gathering Place with R and G .  We hadn't seen G in almost 2 years! R had a modest breakfast- an egg BLT with a side of french toast and she took some home. G had a Belgian waffle with no toppings- smart choice since it wasn't too big!  I had a normal breakfast! Haha! I had a large box to take home! I've never seen pancakes the size of a dinner plate as a side dish to breakfast!! Arie and I went to Perrins for supper.  We had just been at Aaron's which is on the other side of town. Usually it's no big deal but it was rush hour and it's summer AND there was road construction at every turn!  The reuben sandwich was delicious but so big! I love doggie bags! Arie had the poutine! I'm not a fan (their versions has a VERY spicy mayo )  but he loved it.   ...
