For what it's worth...

Opinions please...

So I just finished hosting two young ladies from Spain who were hired as chaperons for an English immersion summer program from Spain. They send students age 13 to 18 to the USA anywhere from three to six weeks. They hire Americans to find families that will host them for free during that time. They say there is no pressure to 'entertain' them but everybody does. I did a lot of activities with the gals that stayed at my house and it was fun.
It seems that the company in Spain gives the American coordinators guidelines for a budget ...the American gals did a wonderful job!
Here's my beef: (you knew that was coming, right?)
A few evenings before the end of the program, there was a farewell 'party' which was held in a beautiful but totally inappropriate locations ( 4 tables for 100 people...really?) and as a thank-you we got to eat fried chicken (try eating that standing up) and sides and desserts that the FAMILIES had been asked to bring. The students then had to publicly thank their host families and give them a rose.
So, why can't this company spend a few dollars for a sit-down meal or maybe just a dessert reception as a THANK YOU to these families who have housed and fed and transported and entertained ...for FREE...all these students that had to pay them a lot of money to come here.
The families deserve a better thank you!
