We have a party every New Year's Eve and invite a few friends to join us for themed potluck of hors d'oeurves. This year the theme was European cuisine. Every couple was asked to bring a food and a beverage from a different country BUT the catch was that we assigned the countries. Each couple got two countries and could bring something from either or both.
Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia, France and Belgium, Italy and Cyprus, Denmark and Norway, Israel and Jordan, Switzerland, Greece and Turkey, Spain and Portugal.
It was a foodie lover's paradise last night.

| Guess what's in the Glugg? |
Beverages ranged from a potent GLUGG to a yogurt drink called Kefir along with wine, sherry and champagne. There was enough for all to taste some very different potables.
The food was unbelievable! Everyone did some research and chose wonderful representations of the given cuisine.
What
party is complete without a plateful of yummy dill shrimp. Such a nice
change from the usual red sauce that goes with shrimp.
 |
| Dilled shrimp! |
 |
| Gruyere muffins! |
 |
| Swiss chocolate |
 |
| Shrimp with prosciutto and cheese...a deadly combination if you are dieting! |
 |
| Retsina and baklava! |
 |
| Dolmas with lamb and yogurt sauce. |
 |
| Halva (means sweet) |
 |
| Bosnian pita. |
 |
| The most potent potable- port and wine and ??. Twas very good! |
 |
| Spanish chorrizo and drunken goat cheese...what a great combination. |

It was a very enjoyable international evening but what's New Year's Eve with a bunch of people with DUCTH last names without a few traditional Dutch bites?
Olliebolen and kroketen made it onto the table a few hours later. We made them from scratch and deep fried them at about 11:00 pm. We love them but because they are so bad for you, this is a once a year production. We usually do olliebolen but not the krokets. Some of our friends with those very Dutch last names had never had them before. I must say they were tasty!
It's 2:00 pm on New Year's Day and we are still recuperating from the fun, food, beverages and prep and clean-up. Here's to next year.
Does anyone have a suggestion for a different theme?

You were much more restrained than I was. I ate a few olliebollen, lots of chocolate, a croissant or two...you get the picture. It's AWFUL to have all tis food around on a day where I have no energy but to sit and read a book, watch football and take a nap.
